In February 2004, the Dynova Group took its first major step into the building industry with the acquisition of Brick Cement & Hardware in Gansbaai. This strategic takeover marked the beginning of what would become a multi-branch retail and construction supply network across the Overberg. With a vision for growth and community impact, this milestone laid the foundation for the Build it Gansbaai legacy.

This moment takes us back to the very beginning—the shop as it stood when we first took it over. Modest, functional, and full of potential, this space marked the starting point of our journey. It’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and the vision that transformed a small-town hardware store into a thriving Build it branch at the heart of the community.

Following the 2004 takeover, significant renovations and upgrades were made to the Brick Cement & Hardware store. These improvements weren’t just cosmetic—they were part of a bigger plan to modernise the store, improve customer experience, and prepare for future growth. This marked a clear commitment to reinvesting in the business and building a strong foundation for what would eventually become Build it Gansbaai.

Before the transformation, before the upgrades—there was the original Bricks Cement & Hardware store. Humble and hardworking, this was the foundation upon which everything was built. It served the community well in its day and became the launchpad for the Dynova Group’s journey into the building supply industry. Every brick in that store tells a story of beginnings, grit, and growth.

As part of our ongoing commitment to better serve our customers, we embarked on a series of in-store renovations. These improvements included upgraded shelving, refreshed layouts, modern signage, and an overall cleaner, more organised retail space. The goal? To create a shopping experience that’s as professional and welcoming as the service we pride ourselves on.

A major milestone in our journey came with the rebranding of Brick Cement & Hardware to Gansbaai Build it. This transformation included new signage, refreshed branding, and a fully stocked store aligned with Build it’s trusted national identity. The change brought greater recognition, stronger supplier networks, and a renewed commitment to serving the local community with quality building materials and expert advice.

Empowering our team has always been a cornerstone of our success. As part of this commitment, our staff participated in corporate training hosted by Build it Head Office. This training focused on improving customer service, product knowledge, and operational excellence—equipping our team with the tools they need to grow professionally and serve our community even better.

A proud moment in our early journey—purchasing our very first delivery truck. This step allowed us to offer faster, more reliable service to our customers and marked the beginning of our dedicated in-house delivery fleet. It wasn’t just a truck—it was a promise to go the extra mile for builders, contractors, and DIYers across the region.

In 2005, we proudly attended our first Build it National Convention—an inspiring gathering of Build it store owners, staff, and head office teams from across the country. This event offered valuable insights, training, and the chance to connect with the broader Build it family. It reinforced our shared mission and energised our team to keep building stronger businesses and stronger communities.

As our team and operations expanded, so did our need for space. The construction of a new office floor at Build it Gansbaai marked a major step in our growth—creating a dedicated, modern workspace to support our staff and streamline operations. It was more than just bricks and mortar—it was an investment in our people and our future.

In true community spirit, we proudly participated in the Build it U13 Soccer Tournament—marching down the road to Gansbaai Primary School with our team, supporters, and local players. This event wasn't just about soccer; it was about uplifting youth, promoting teamwork, and showing our support for the next generation. A proud moment that reminded us what it means to build more than just buildings—we build community.

After completing another round of store renovations—modernising the layout, refreshing the interior, and optimising the shopping experience—we achieved a new milestone: our best trading month to date. The results spoke for themselves. With a revitalised space and renewed energy, our team delivered exceptional service and our community responded with record-breaking support.

A defining moment in our journey—the big move into our fully renovated Build it store. With expanded floor space, improved layout, and a fresh new look, this wasn’t just a change of scenery—it was a bold leap forward. The new store reflected our growth, ambition, and continued dedication to delivering a top-tier retail experience to the Gansbaai community.

With our newly renovated store complete, a proud and symbolic moment followed—our Build it flags flying high for the very first time outside the building. It was more than just branding; it was a declaration of identity, pride, and progress. A visual milestone that marked a new chapter in our story and a beacon for what we stand for in the Gansbaai community.

With our continued growth came the need for a more professional and spacious work environment. The opening of our brand-new upstairs offices provided just that—offering a modern, organised space for our management and support teams. Overlooking the store, these offices symbolise our elevated vision and ongoing commitment to building a business that runs efficiently from the ground up.

A bittersweet and powerful moment—the old door to our original store was closed for the last time, marking the end of an era. At the same time, we officially opened the doors to our brand-new Build it store, ushering in a new chapter filled with opportunity, innovation, and growth. It was more than a move—it was a transformation.

Opened Overberg Trusses in Gansbaai, bringing expert timber roof truss manufacturing and service to support local construction and growth.

On 2 August 2024, we proudly celebrated 20 years in business—a milestone that reflects two decades of hard work, community support, and continuous growth. From a single store takeover to becoming a trusted name in the building industry, our journey has been built on relationships, resilience, and a shared vision.
